What can I eat after oral surgery?

A lukewarm, non-spicy, soft food diet is best tolerated after surgery. Go with what feels comfortable. Avoid foods with tiny seeds that could get lodged in the wounds. It is best to avoid drinking with a straw for at least 72 hours after your operation to avoid increased bleeding and to help with healing.

What can I eat after jaw surgery (orthognathic)?

Accepted Answer

It is crucial to stick to a liquid/puree diet for the first 2 weeks. Soups and smoothies are a great option. For the next 4 weeks, it is important to have a soft-food diet – anything that does not require too much mastication (eggs, fish, pasta…).  After these 6 weeks, you will be able to slowly return to your regular diet by following your comfort level. To heal properly, it is crucial to stay hydrated and to have an adequate calorific intake.

Question 3

How long should the swelling last after having my wisdom teeth extracted?

Accepted Answer

It is normal to have some swelling after a wisdom teeth extraction. Swelling peaks at 48-72 hours after the surgery. Ice compresses to the cheek area in the first 48 hours will help reduce swelling. To help drain the swelling it is recommended to sleep in a reclining position for the first 3-4 nights. Contact us if swelling reappears once it has already reduced. This could be sign of infection.

I lost my stitches quicker than I was told. Should I worry?

Accepted Answer

Occasionally stitches fall out prematurely. The sutures used are most often dissolvable which means that they fall out on their own within one to two weeks. If you notice that the stitches have fallen out in the days following your surgery, there is no reason to worry. The area will continue its healing process. In such cases, it is even more important to maintain a healthy oral hygiene ritual. It is recommended to rinse your mouth after each meal with the prescribed mouthwash or with a salt-water solution (2 tsp of salt in 1 litre of water).

I see a hole where my tooth was extracted. Should I worry?

Accepted Answer

It is possible to see a hole where the tooth has been removed. There is no reason to worry, the regular healing process will close the gap. In such cases, it is recommended to rinse your mouth after each meal with the prescribed mouthwash or with a salt-water solution (2tsp of salt in 1 litre of water). The irrigation of the operated region will help dislodge any food debris that might have found its way into the cavity and delay healing.

Question 6

I have had oral surgery and the bleeding persists. What should I do?

Accepted Answer

It is possible to see blood in your saliva even several days after your surgery. Use the supplied compresses to control bleeding. It is recommended to bite down on the compresses for 30 minutes after surgery. They are to be changed out as needed. If the bleeding persists, bite longer on the compresses. You can also bite down on a moistened black tea bag. If the bleeding continues despite the above recommendations, contact us at 514-667-5354. If bright red heavy bleeding occurs in the days following your surgery, it is crucial to notify your surgeon right away. Bruises might develop mainly if you are taking blood thinners or if the bleeding took longer to control.

When can I start brushing my teeth after surgery?

Accepted Answer

It is recommended to start brushing your teeth the day after surgery. For the first days, you will want to go softly and focus mainly on the teeth. A mouthwash has been prescribed to help maintain a healthy oral hygiene. If not, you can also rinse with a salt-water solution of 2 tsp of salt to 1 litre of water. 
The mouthwash or saline solution is to be started the day after your surgery. It is favourable to rinse your mouth after each meal for the first week to help in the healing process.

Question 9

Can I drink alcohol after my surgery?

Accepted Answer

It is not recommended to drink alcohol in the 24 hours following surgery if you have gone under intravenous sedation or local anaesthesia. It is also not recommended to mix alcohol and pain killers. Make sure you are well hydrated and have eaten before drinking any alcohol.
